In our fast-paced lives, it is easy for our minds to get caught in a “problem loop”, relentlessly analysing what is wrong, who is to blame, and why our challenges seem so overwhelming. While understanding a problem has its place, dwelling on it can leave us feeling powerless and trapped. As a clinical hypnotherapist and counsellor in Melbourne, I’ve seen this pattern countless times. The truth is, while we can’t always control our circumstances, we can absolutely control our focus. A solution-focused mindset offers a refreshing and empowering shift in perspective. Instead of endlessly dissecting the problem, this approach focuses on identifying solutions, harnessing personal strengths, and envisioning a preferred future. It operates on the simple but profound premise that you already possess the resources to create positive change. The key to unlocking them is to start asking better questions.
This empowering framework is a cornerstone of the holistic, solution-focused approach we practice at Equator Therapies. We guide you from a place of problem orientation to one of possibility and action. We don’t just talk about what’s wrong; we actively search for what’s right and what can be even better. By shifting your perspective, we can begin the deeper work of healing and growth, whether through inner child work, shadow work, or enhancing your emotional intelligence. The journey begins by asking the right question at the right time.
A core practice in this approach is the “Miracle Question.” I often ask my clients to imagine a scenario: “Tonight, while you are asleep, a miracle happens and the problem that has been troubling you is solved. Since you were asleep, you don’t know that the miracle has occurred. When you wake up tomorrow morning, what will be the very first small thing you notice that tells you things are different?” This powerful question bypasses the problem-focused part of the brain and directly accesses your vision for a better future. It moves you from a vague sense of “I don’t want to feel this way” to a concrete picture of what you do want. The answer might be as simple as, “I would get out of bed without hitting the snooze button,” or “I would smile at my partner.” This simple mental exercise provides the first tangible step towards change.
Once you have these small, observable signs, you can begin to look for “exceptions”—the times when a small piece of that miracle is already happening. For example, “When was the last time I managed to get out of bed without hitting snooze, even for a day?” or “What was different about that day?” This shifts your focus from your perceived failures to your existing capabilities and successes, however small. By intentionally searching for what is already working, you build momentum and a deep sense of agency. You are no longer defined by your problems but by your capacity for solutions. This aligns perfectly with the principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which also focus on actionable change and embracing your internal strengths.
Adopting a solution-focused mindset is not about ignoring your problems; it’s about a more efficient and empowering way to solve them. By consciously asking better questions, you cultivate a proactive rather than a reactive approach to life. It empowers you to recognise your own potential for growth, step into your inner strength, and create the life you truly want. We can help you shift your focus from problems to possibilities. At Equator Therapies, we provide expert counselling and clinical hypnotherapy to help you unlock the solutions already within you.
